Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a Senior Correspondent for The
Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is also the creator and actor of the sitcom
Ronny Chieng International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia and Comedy
Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an Malaysian
Chinese family. From 1989 to 1994, he lived in Manchester in New Hampshire.
Chieng performed alongside Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. Chieng
was invited to audition for The Daily Show's reporter role two years later. He
was named one the top 10 Comics to follow by Variety in July 2016. In October
of 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to offer a response to a
Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many considered racist. Chieng airs an
expletive-filled critique of the segment on Fox News that was deemed
conservative by many. He also revisited New York City's Chinatown in which
Watters had mocked residents, and conducted interviews more respectfully in
Mandarin as well as Cantonese. The video was viewed by millions and received
attention in the Washington Post and Slate. Washington Post and Slate In his
early years, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout. Though he's lived in Australia for
over 10 years, he does not have a permanent residence or citizenship in
Australia. In the year 2018 Chieng joked that he was unfriendly during the
Daily Show and later clarified in an interview that Chieng was "100
percent unafraid of dogs".
